Student Grants and Scholarships

The thought of higher education can be quite a scary prospect. For one thing you’ll very likely be leaving your comfort zone for the very first time, leaving home and venturing out into the big wide world, new friends and new beginnings, and the other question is how on earth you are going to be able to afford to pay for it all.

Whereas it can be quite intimidating just to think about it, it’s very important that you don’t allow lack of money to inhibit your further education. It will be worth it in the end and you could have a lifetime of reaping the benefits of your higher education. You may be one of the fortunate few with mega rich parents who can pay for you to breeze through your university education, or for everybody else there are other options.

Student Grants

The first thing to remember when you start worrying about how you’re going to pay for your higher education is that you are not alone. Plenty of people before you, with you and after you will have the same problem and there are ways of sorting the problem out. Invest a little time in finding out all about student grants which are available for your chosen course and university. Students who are in financial need often qualify for Federal Grants to help them through their higher education, and these don’t even have to be paid back after graduation, so it’s a great place to start and is means tested to your family income. It is important to start your application for any grants as soon as possible, these things take time and the sooner you start the better.

As well as Federal Grants you may find that your chosen college of University has college grants which are available. The admissions office should be able to give you full details so don’t be afraid to ask.

Scholarships

There are often scholarships available which can be an alternative method of subsidizing your higher education. These can be awarded based on all sorts of criteria and you really need to find out about the individual requirements for each scholarship offered at your chosen university or college. Sports scholarships are very popular and provide funding for students who excel in a certain sporting field, although academic qualifications are also often needed. Many scholarships are completely individual to a certain college or course; some will provide the full funding of your education (if you’re extremely lucky) while others will provide a set amount to go towards your education.

Scholarships are often highly sought after and competition can be pretty fierce so it’s important to do your homework and find out exactly what the criteria is. It may be primarily about grades, it may be primarily about your financial situation, or it may be that they are looking for somebody who has experience of charity work for example. It takes all sorts and really does depend on the course you are taking and the scholarships offered for each particular case.
